Comic-Con: ‘Green Lantern’ Panel Print E-mail
Written by Tony Lazlo, CC2K Staff Writer

ImageI’m happy to see that Ryan Reynolds knows the Green Lantern oath by heart.

The star of Warner Bros’ upcoming sci-fi epic recited the oath for a youngster who asked an audience question, then later suggested that a raffle prize (his GL ring prop) be awarded to the boy if no one claimed it. (Someone did. Shucks!)

Interview with ‘The Commune’ Director Elisabeth Fies Print E-mail
Written by Tony Lazlo, CC2K Staff Writer

ImageRecently CC2K's own Tony Lazlo got to sit down with filmmaker Elisabeth Fies and talk about her new film The Commune. Being the uber-geek that he is, naturally Tony took the interview in all kinds of fun, film-centric directions. Read on for the full interview!

TL: Elisabeth, thanks for agreeing to this interview! First off, let's talk about your movie, The Commune. When you set out to make this movie, did you have any existing movies or eras of filmmaking in mind that served as inspiration for your project? Or in other words: There's an old saying that an artist should make the kind of art that they themselves would like; What kind of movie did you want to make when you made The Commune?

EF: I wanted to make a good old-fashioned 70s cerebral thriller/horror. The kind of movie that holds up and still scares because it’s about something and is done with intelligence and grace. Good examples are Martin, Burnt Offerings, Repulsion, The Tenant, Don’t Look Now, The Changeling, Let’s Scare Jessica to Death. I’m a film scholar, and I felt like these movies weren’t being made anymore. So yeah, I made what I wanted to see. Because for the last decade we’ve only received one movie in that style a year, while we’re besieged with dozens of lazy Saw and Friday the 13th knock-offs.

The Post-Ironic Horror of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Print E-mail
Written by Anastasia Salter, Special to CC2K
ImageWhen I saw the trailer for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, I felt a moment of interest. Slick editing put together the image of a Harry-Potteresque contemporary fantasy with plenty of allusions to classic films. The last successful movie like that to come out of Disney studios was Enchanted, a film that brilliantly poked fun at the “pre-ironic” era of Disney while still delivering on the fairy tale ending. After watching Enchanted, I wondered why Disney hadn’t done more with this type of referential, tongue-in-cheek storytelling. After watching The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, I had an entirely different question: how did the name “Prime Merlinian” ever make it past a drafting board?

How to Improve ‘Inception’: Some Enthusiastic Ideas From CC2K Print E-mail
Written by Lance Carmichael and Tony Lazlo

ImageCC2K's Lance Carmichael and Tony Lazlo explore Christopher Nolan's latest epic and discuss what went right, what went wrong – and what improvements can be made.

SPOILERS! HUGE, GIGANTIC SPOILERS AHEAD!

Tony Lazlo starts the discussion:

Theoretically, Christopher Nolan’s Inception has a lot going for it. It’s a wildly inventive action movie about high-tech thieves who raid people’s dreams for industrial secrets. It’s a heady science-fiction flick that includes a slew of great ideas and an admirably complex set of rules that lead to a four-tiered climax that holds together.

Let me stress: Those are undeniably good things. I admire Nolan for smuggling so many rich ideas into his movies, including his summer blockbusters. The Prestige came packed with good ideas, as did his earlier movie, Memento (though that wasn’t a summer blockbuster). I like that typical American moviegoers will have to sort through the complexity of Inception this summer.

But for such an inventive movie, Inception disappointed me with its lack of invention, fuzzy rules and bland characters. During an emergency summit at CC2K’s west-coast headquarters, Lance Carmichael and I discussed our problems with (and praise for) Nolan’s latest movie, and we wanted to share our dialogue here.
