With the series finale of Lost less than a week away, it’s hard not to think about its future legacy. Here’s my prediction: years from now, when critics are examining the history of television, I believe that Lost is going to be ranking among the best and most influential shows ever made.
That’s not to say that Lost hasn’t had its missteps. (Nikki/Paulo and the episode devoted to how Jack got his tattoos come immediately to mind.) But even at its worst, Lost was better than 90 percent of television on the air. At its best, Lost was transcendent, a character-driven drama with an overarching mythology that seamlessly incorporated elements of philosophy, mythology, religion, and science fiction. It was a show that worked on many different levels, never failing to challenge its audience. It was a show that made you think and demanded to be watched over and over again.
But in order to examine Lost’s legacy, we have to go back to the beginning. |

CC2K's Tony Lazlo tries to make sense of Shawn Ryan's excellent finale to The Shield.
Walton Goggins as Shane Vendrell The Shield wasn't about Shane – but he gave it a run. Show creator Shawn Ryan came back to write, among other episodes, the series finale for his brutal east-L.A. crime drama The Shield, and he took the title for his final episode out of the mouth of one of the secondary lead characters and not his leading man, Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis). |

Don’t believe what you’ve read about Adam Richman’s preparations for the eating challenges on his show, Man vs. Food on the Travel Channel. “There’s a lot of ‘they said he does…’ out there,” he says. “It’s like my medical information. I just don’t share it.” Whatever he does, it seems to be working. Man vs. Food, a show about…well, eating a lot, has just started its second season and Richman keeps traveling the country to find the best food and to take on the biggest and best food challenges out there. During a break from traveling he took the time to talk to me about the show and what’s to come (but not how exactly he manages to gulp all that food down!).
