Television Collision: Catching Up On McLeod’s Daughters Print E-mail
Written by Phoebe Raven, CC2K TV Editor
ImageIt’s summer time again and while this year there are an astonishing amount of Summer Shows that keep me entertained (Persons Unknown, Haven, Hung, True Blood, Royal Pains, Mad Men, Boston Med, So You Think You Can Dance…), I still maintained my summer tradition of picking one show of the past to catch up with. The choice for 2010: Australian hit drama McLeod’s Daughters (2001-2008).

I had previously watched a few episodes on German afternoon television, but as is the plight with so many good shows, the German dubbing leaves a lot to be desired. Especially since Australians have that cool accent. Without this accent, the show might as well have been set somewhere on a ranch in America. But it’s not: it’s the Australian outback, complete with cattle, sheep, horses and Utes (pronounced “yoots” as in “utility vehicles” or pickup trucks).

Television Collision: Do We Really Need Another Medical Drama? Print E-mail
Written by Phoebe Raven, CC2K TV Editor

ImageIn the summer of 2009, TNT premiered the medical drama HawthoRNe to solid numbers. Now the show is back, has changed its setting, some of its cast and is delving into the deep end when it comes to the romantic storylines. I don't like it as much as I used to, but here's my original assessment again on why it is a show worth watching.

Summer shows are a tricky thing. In previous years I have tried to avoid them and tided myself over the summer hiatus with DVDs and movies, because I didn’t want to get attached to a show and its characters only to have it be canceled after 12 episodes. I have mentioned it before, I seem to have a different taste than mainstream America, so chances are I will pick the one show to love that will most definitely get canned.

But this year, and the launch of this column had a lot to do with it, I decided to keep up with the summer shows, or at least the ones that were brand new (I am not counting among these shows such “established” formats as True Blood or Burn Notice). So every week on my schedule I have shows like Nurse Jackie, Hung, Royal Pains, Dark Blue, The Philanthropist, Hawthorne and a couple more I am forgetting right now.

Television Collision: Looking For the New Mystery Hit Show Print E-mail
Written by Phoebe Raven, CC2K TV Editor
ImagePersonally, I wasn’t affected by the end of Lost, since I gave up somewhere in Season 4. I have confessed it before, I am not a big sci-fi fan and I can get bored of mystery shows that are too “out there” and leave too many things unexplained. On the other hand, I am a huge Whedonite and admittedly his shows – from Buffy to Angel to Firefly to Dollhouse – have elements of supernatural phenomena and mysteries, sometimes more, sometimes less.
So, I am not completely insusceptible to mystery, sci-fi and the supernatural elements of television.

However, everybody who isn’t a Hollywood suit knows that phenomena like Lost don’t come along all that often. Sure, you can try and hype the crap out of what you want to position as “the next big thing”, but only if there is some residual quality, if a show or movie taps into something universal and brings it across somewhat plausibly will it ever truly become a phenomenon and eventual “cult”.

Television Collision: Hung Up on Hung Print E-mail
Written by Phoebe Raven, CC2K TV Editor

ImageOne of my favorite Summer Shows of last year returned to the air two weeks ago and so I thought I would go back and re-post my original article about this great show's memorable finale. I am, of course, talking about yet another HBO show, namely Hung. I strongly suggest you tune in this time around if you have missed it last summer. It's fairly easy to catch up on and very entertaining to be hung up on.

As the rush of summer finale week still lingers in my head, I am anxiously awaiting the two-hour season premiere of House tonight and some other favs coming back later this week. So a rave or a rant about House will have to wait till next week, then what to write about instead…?
(I suppose some would expect an Emmy column this week, but to be frank, I didn't get into them this year. I suppose the right people won, and if they didn't, eh, no sweat off my back. I'll still like what I like.)

I know I had previously closed the chapter of Summer TV for this year, but let me just add an addendum, after all that’s what they’re for. Surprisingly enough the finale of a summer show that stuck with me the most was the one from the provocatively-titled HBO show Hung, which aired last week. (I told you HBO is awesome.)
